Preparing to Blow Up Part of Hayden Butte (A Mountain)
Sun Devil Stadium is nestled between the peaks of Hayden Butte, named for Senator Carl Hayden and popularly known as ‘A’ Mountain. The Tempe Normal School Class of 1918 first put an ‘N’ on the mountain and the current ‘A’ was built in 1955. Construction of the stadium required the excavation of part of the east side of the butte. | Date: 1957/1958
