Root Beer Stand
A & W Root Beer Stands were among the first franchised restaurants in the United States. A & W originated in California in 1919 and there were more than 170 of these roadside restaurants in the US by the 1930s. They flourished after World War II with the expansion of the highway system and post-war affluence. There were more than 450 nationwide in 1950 and more than 2,000 by the 1960s. The first Tempe A & W opened in 1951. | Creator: City of Tempe, Community Development Department. | Date: 1972 | Source: Tempe History Museum, 1992.2.124. | Rights: Tempe History Museum
