Taco Bell

Taco Bell
Glen Bell opened a hot dog stand in San Bernandino in 1948, but shifted to selling Tacos by 1951 when he noticed the popularity of a nearby taco stand. By the early 1960s there were El Taco restaurants in southern California. Bell sold his taco restaurants in the early 1960s, and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey, California in 1962, after which he began franchising the restaurants. Taco Bell opened its first three restaurants in Phoenix in 1965 and its first restaurant in Tempe 1965 (at 936 E. Apache), offering free "Mexican hats" with every purchase. | Creator: City of Tempe, Community Development Department. | Date: 1973 | Source: Tempe History Museum, 1992.2.78. | Rights: Tempe History Museum
