This scene depicts the first parties of Saints who, in 1846, were driven from their homes in Nauvoo, IL and crossed the plains traveling the 1,400-mile journey from the Mississippi River to Salt Lake City. The couple pulling the handcart represents the approximately 4,000 Saints who used a handcart, rather than a traditional wagon pulled by oxen to carry their belongings to Salt Lake.
